Google is sinking $5 billion into an undersea power cable that could revolutionize offshore wind energy… or go bust.

Google has thrown its clout and money into an “audacious” plan to build a 350-mile-long undersea transmission cable capable of connecting giant offshore wind installations along the Atlantic seaboard to the main electrical grid. The line “will serve as a clean-energy superhighway, with on-ramps for wind farms” from New York to Virginia, says Rick Needham, Google’s green energy czar.
