This strengthen the business of the Group Sanjosé.  During the General Ordinary Assembly, that took place in the carried out at the Buenos Aires Board of Trade, Carlos Casado´s shareholders, company that has a participation of 50% by the Sanjosé Group, designated a new directory under the presidency of Jacinto Rey.This way, the Sanjosé Group, holding of spanish capital with presence in eleven countries, consolidates as controller shareholder of Casado starting from which important investments in the development of new business areas are being carried out.

“Our global strategic plan contemplates to continue impelling the diversification of the business of the holding, and, in this sense, starting from the investment in Carlos Casado we will impel our entrance in innovative areas such as the agrobusiness, the tourism and the nature conservation, the biopharmacy and the energy through the development of energetic cultivations”, Jacinto Rey declared.

After the setting in value of the main asset of 310.000 hectares in the Paraguayan Chaco, Jacinto Rey enlarged on its investments in biofuels, especially in the development of an experimental cultivation of the Jatropha Curcas bush.

It is a seed with high oily content, that presents a magnificent aptitude for the obtaining of biodiesel, it reproduces at great scale, it generates labor opportunity for not qualified manpower and it doesn’t outline the current so controversial dilemma of energy versus foods, since its characteristics impede it to be used for other means rather than energy.

This line starts from a closed agreement with the companies Patagonia Bioenergía and Celulosa Argentina.

Antecedents

The Sanjosé Group began its activity in Spain in 1975 with the construction as business unit, and it is present in another 10 countries: United States, France, Germany, Portugal, Morocco, the Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic and Panama where it gives employment to 5.000 people in direct way and it generates a global billing of 1.600 million Eurus.

The businessmen will present today morning the details to the minister Bertero. Who is behind the millionaire investment? Where will it be?

Patagonia BioEnergía, a company of argentine capitals, will build in the city of San Lorenzo the biggest plant in biofuels of the Argentina.

The president of the company, Gabriel Obrador, will travel today to the city of Santa Fe with its main directives, among them Federico Pochat, to present the proyect to the minister of Production Juan José Bertero in the morning.Â

The plant, that is already in construction, will be one of the biggest and most efficient of the world and it will begin to operate in June. In its first stage, it will have a capacity of production of 250.000 tons of biodiesel per year, and it will be duplicated in the second phase.Â

Although initially it will use raw soya oil as raw material, a novelty of the enterprise of Patagonia Bionergía is that it will be progressively replaced by jatropha oil. Â

The decision is not casual because it will allow to the company to make synergy with others of its business: the development of alternative oleaginous cultivations (inedible), as the Jatropha curcas, whose oil will replace the soya oil for the biodiesel production in the medium term.Â

The jatropha is a plant that comes from America, that has high yields of oil even in very marginal lands, not competing-therefore-with other nutritious cultivations neither for the floor nor for the water.Â

According to the papers that will be presented today to Bertero, the plant has last generation technology provided by Desmet-Ballestra, the German leader in the production of plants for the oil industry and oleochemical, it will also fulfill the strictest European norms as for quality, security and environmental hygiene.Â

Who is behind this? Patagonia Bioenergía is formed by the association of two Argentinean companies, with several years of operation in the country, and financial investors. The two companies are Cazenave y Asociados S.A., a company of services for the agroindustry with almost 40 years of growth, and Energía & Soluciones S.A., a company that commercializes energy, mainly of natural gas and fuels.Â

Biodiesel plant/Photo: Fernando López King

The local cereal Vicentín and the multinational Glencore are building a second biodiesel plant elaborated from soya in San Lorenzo, Santa Fe, that will be ready between June and July of this year. This way, they hope to duplicate the production capacity of this biofuel that they have from last October, when they inaugurated in that point of the santafesino agro-industrial cord, one of the two majors factories in the country, with a production capacity of 240,000 annual tons.

Managers of both companies confirmed the project, although they preferred not to give more precisions. The plant that is operative, according to what was announced at the time, counts with a unit of crude soya oil refining with a capacity for 330,000 annual tons, that demanded an investment of u$s 40 million.

Renova, the company under which they merged in this business, is one of the two mayor biofuel exporting companies of the country. In fact, along with Ecofuel (the company of the other national-multinational cereal pair, Bunge and Aceitera General Deheza (AGD), that has the same present  production capacity and technology that Renova), were responsible for more of 90% of the exports of that product last year. According to the Secretary of Agriculture, in 2007, the sales of the exported biodiesel reached u$s 268 million, that came from 319,093 dispatched tons (equivalent to a value of u$s 841 per ton). Of those shipments, almost three quarters (73%) were destined to the United States, whereas the rest went to countries of Europe.

Interest of several

In the country there are eight qualified companies to export these vegetal fuels. Besides Renova and Ecofuel, the other plant that has certain weight in the export is the one that has Vicentín in its place of origin, Avellaneda, in the north of Santa Fe, with a capacity of 47,500 tons. The others are Biomadero, with a capacity for 72,000 tons, located in the Buenosairean locality of Villa Madero; Soy Energy, in the Buenosairean locality of Pilar, with a capacity for 32,400 tons; Energía Sanluiseña Refinería Argentina, in the city of Villa Mercedes, with a capacity for 30,000 tons; Advanced Organic Materials (AOM), also in the Buenosairean Pilar, with a capacity for 15,800 tons, and Biodiesel, in the santafesina Sancti Spiritu, with a capacity for 6,480 tons.

There are another five projects under construction, all in Santa Fe. Unitec Bio, of the media entrepreneur Eduardo Eurnekian, of 220,000 annual tons. Mills, food company of the Perez Companc family, began to construct a plant in Rosario, with a capacity for 100,000 tons. The French Trader Louis Dreyfus is building a greater plant, of 300,000 tons, in its General Lagos complex. Explora will produce 120,000 tons in Puerto San Martin, and Patagonia Bioenergía, 250,000 in San Lorenzo. Mean while, ACA just announced their association with two European companies to build a mega-plants of 250,000 tons of biodiesel in Puerto San Martin.
