Aaron Socha, and Jason Sello conducted research to streamline biodiesel production.

Two Brown chemists have developed a more efficient way to produce biodiesel from waste vegetable oil. 

Using two catalysts common in organic chemistry, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Jason Sello and Postdoctoral Fellow Aaron Socha were able to synthesize biodiesel in a single reaction vessel, according to a University press release. A recent political debate between two Iowa congressional candidates has shed light on their respective views of the biodiesel tax credit. During the Oct. 15 event, which was broadcast on Iowa Public Television, incumbent third district Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-Des Moines) spoke out in support of the tax credit while challenger Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale), a member of the state senate, said he would not support reinstatement of the credit. After receiving a $10,000 TogetherGreen fellowship from an alliance between Toyota and the Audubon Society, Kenya Stump, the manager of the environmental assistance branch of the Kentucky division of compliance, will form the Kentucky Biofuels for Schools Program. Ireland-based Ceimici Novel Ltd. recently announced it has developed an innovative catalyst for use in new and existing biodiesel plants. According to the company, use of its unique catalyst can reduce production costs, increase profitability and results in ‘greener’ biodiesel production.

The catalytic material SCRO-80, which has been titled “Smart Catalyst,” facilitates the transesterification process in minutes rather than hours, said Ben Engelen, Ceimici Novel’s market developer. While Engelen was unable to disclose any information regarding the chemical structure or composition of SCRO-80, he did note that that the catalytic material “will not suffer from obsolescence.” Leer más »

ACCORDING to new market research report, Global Biodiesel Market (2009 – 2014), published by MarketsandMarkets, the total global biodiesel market is expected to be worth US$12.6 billion by 2014, out of which the European and Americas market will account for nearly 55.6 per cent and 28.6pc of the total revenues respectively.

As Indonesia is today the world’s largest producer of crude palm oil (CPO) — a desirable feedstock for biodiesel production — it has the potential to grow into a world biodiesel leader and a model for plantation sustainability.

Biodiesel has the potential to become a significant industry sector in Indonesia, supported by two of its most valuable assets: its oil palm plantations, and more importantly, its people. Growing imports of cheap Argentine biodiesel into Europe are replacing U.S. imports hit by European Union anti-dumping duties in March, Swiss-German biodiesel producer Biopetrol said on Thursday.

“Increasing amounts of indirectly-subsidized biodiesel have been coming to Europe from Argentina since the second quarter,” Biopetrol said in a statement in a statement on its first half 2009 results. Leer más »

At the end of October the works will be finished and a period of tests will begin that will be prolonged for two months. Â

The Peninsular Biocarburantes company, with social headquarters in Madrid, has foreseen to start at beginnings of the 2009 the biodiesel plant that at the moment is building in the fourth sector of the polygon of Rio do Pozo.
