Iberdrola, a role model in clean energy in the USA. The clean energy and the nuclear development will be the new pillars of the electric. The company competes with the European energy giants for the nuclear in the United Kingdom.Â
«We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories». After eight years of giving the back to the environment, to the Kyoto protocol and the climatic change, this sentence pronounced by the new president of USA, Barack Obama, in his investiture speech sets a new road in the energy policy of the first world power.Â
The renewables won’t substitute overnight the petroleum, but to take advantage of the photovoltaic, wind or geothermal energy begins to be an idea with form in Obama’s dreams.Â
Everything seems to indicate that in the coming years, the new North American administration will direct enormous quantities of resources to coordinate the care of the environment with other objectives of geostrategic cut. «Every day brings new proofs that our uses of the energy strengthen our opponents and puts in danger the planet», Obama affirmed. More consumption of petroleum is only translated into more money for countries not necessarily friends of the United States.Â
This way, the new president has made clear that the renewable energy will be one of the motors of his stimulus plan for the economy, to which will dedicate 15.000 million annual dollars. A bet that according to his opinion will be translated in the creation of «millions of job positions».Â
Employment generation, reduction of the petroleum imports and to rescue that of «not even water to the enemy». The plan seems perfect and also surrounded of the halo of respect to the environment. Obama ambitions that in 2025 at least 25% of the electricity of USA comes from the clean energy, for what he plans to establish a national standard that forces it.Â
This supposes in the practice that in next three years the production of this energy type be duplicated. Other measures will go guided to the extension of the fiscal deductions in vigor and the simplification of the systems through which the companies have access to the different incentives.
A promising studentÂ
With 41% of his new project portfolio set on the American market and located as second company of the wind power market of the country, the Spanish Iberdrola is already «official» located in the start square.Â
The purchase on last September of the electric American Energy East as well as the construction of wind power plants in several points of the country has opened it the doors of this immense market.
And for that reason, some passages of the speech of the 44º president from United States were as music to the ears of the Spanish company. After these operations and the integration of Scottish Power, the president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Gallant, affirmed some months ago to COMPANY that the purchases have ended and pointed to a future centered in the consolidation of the group.Â
Second front: nuclearÂ
The other open front, the development of plants able to generate nuclear energy, has the support of a lead argument behind. This winter the old fights due to the bill of the invoice of the gas between Ukraine and Russia have taken Europe to see their supply interrupted for 20 days.Â
While in the European Parliament the debate of the energy security continues, the countries began a while ago to profile its supply model. Again the renewables charge protagonism, but nobody forgets that the nuclear development or the improvement of the existent facilities is another of the fundamental pillars.Â
Not by chance last month the interest of the main companies of the sector has been increased by what will be one of the main pillars of the European economies.
The program designed by Gordon Brown’s Government for the renovation of the nuclear park and the construction of a dozen of reactors has supposed the starting signal to ambitious plans in this environment.
The German E.On and RWE are a already working creating a «joint venture» to build and develop nuclear centrals in the United Kingdom. The French EDF also wants to enter in that market and it has done so through the purchase of British Energy that already possesses eight power stations of this type in the country.Â
It won’t be in Spanish floor, where the nuclear moratorium persists – in spite of the external energy dependence of more than 80% -, but the Spanish company with headquarters in Bilbao, has in its future growth guidelines a wide chapter related with the development of this energy type. For it, it has created a «joint venture» with the British Scottish and Southern Energy that has as objective to build new power stations in the Islands.Â
Iberdrola has clear that the nuclear energy is essential facing to get a diversified supply and to reach the objectives of CO2 emission reduction.Â
The managerial movements of the big energy companies demonstrate that they go a step before the social debates, making possible that challenges as that of the nuclear security be completely feasible.Â
